Birthday Adventures

Everything in the library worth setting up for birthday.

A birthday adventure is the trade of ten minutes of setup for an hour where the children run the party. That hour is the whole point, and there are three ways it goes wrong.

Arrivals are staggered, so the game cannot depend on everybody being there at the start. Give it a first job that a late child can pick up. The birthday child expects to be at the front, and if the game rewards whoever is fastest, they may not be, which is its own kind of disaster. And no scoring, because a party game that keeps score becomes an argument about the score at roughly minute twenty.

Match the age carefully. Treasure hunts and pirates land from five to nine. Spies hold to about thirteen. From eleven upward, a mystery with suspects beats a hunt, because what an eleven year old wants is to be trusted with something that is not obviously for small children. Getting that wrong is the difference between an hour of quiet and six teenagers on their phones.
