Puzzle Quests

A chain of puzzles, one room, no running about.

A puzzle quest is the version for when you cannot hide anything. No trail through the house, no props taped under chairs: a stack of pages, a table, and a chain of puzzles where each answer unlocks the next page.

It is the format for a waiting room, a long car trip, a hospital visit, a rainy afternoon in a hotel, or a classroom where the desks do not move. It is also the easiest to set up badly, because with nothing physical to hold, the only feedback a solver gets is whether the next page makes sense. Every step has to be checkable on its own, or a wrong turn on page two is not discovered until page five and the whole thing has to be unpicked.

Look for quests where each answer is a word or a number that visibly fits a slot: a four letter answer going into four boxes says "wrong" immediately if you have five letters. That single design choice is the difference between a quest that runs itself and one that needs an adult reading over a shoulder.
